Taking classes at Yu Tang ceramics is hands down one of the best decisions I've ever made! Curtis Yu, the owner, is incredibly welcoming, kind, and understanding. The instructors, including Day Chan, are friendly, patient, and encouraging. In fact, while I'm complimenting the staff- let me say that Bryn, Megan, the Sarahs, (and the other staff members I haven't met, I'm sure) are so helpful, and brighten my day whenever I see them! There is also an in-studio turtle named Turtle, who is super cute. Yu Tang Ceramics is truly a place for relaxation, focus, and building a creative community. It's so worth it to go here, if you can!
(make sure you bring an apron!) Today was my first day for a 3-week private instruction series and I can’t wait to go back. My instructor, Iphis, was so easy, kind and mellow to take direction from. I felt both challenged and supported by the directives and am happy with the results of my first day. The facility itself was in great condition and had a serene ambiance. All the basic tools for construction (for both hand-building and wheel) were available as well as space to glaze and fire. I’m looking forward to next week!
Yu Tang is a wonderful place. I took the beginner wheel throwing class and would wholeheartedly recommend it. You get a lot of attention from the instructors (who are incredible) and a lot of self-guided time. This is a great place to start if you’re looking to try something new, and you’d be surprised at how much you can learn in 6 weeks! I loved it so much I signed up again
This studio has such a lovely, warm, and creative energy— I would recommend the courses to anyone! I had an amazing experience during the beginner 8-week class over the summer. Even in a group setting, the instructors were great at giving everyone individualized attention and meeting each student where they were at. The space itself is very well maintained with good emphasis on safe practices. Studio hours outside of class were easy to sign up for, and I found the other members of the community to be very kind about sharing knowledge. I hope to return for another class or join as a member in the future. I can’t stress enough that the people here are amazing! All my thanks to the wonderful instructors (Day and Bryn) and to Curtis for providing such a uniquely welcoming place to explore and connect over ceramics.
Tbh super bummed because we got 1 piece out of 3 that we made. I had such a positive experience with the classes and there were some lovely instructors, but we could not find my friend’s pieces for glazing, so we used a mug that was unclaimed. When I went to pick up the results, it turns out someone claimed the mug and the glaze got scrubbed so they could use it. Which makes total sense! Just really frustrated that we basically lost pieces twice and we came out of the class with one piece. Again, I think this studio is great! I just hope this is a good motivation for them to be super diligent about making sure pieces find their creators throughout the class, because it sucks to take a class and invest a lot of time and work into the pieces and get very little out of it at the end
